- Arts are having two modes of representation:
Visual Arts & Performing Arts
- Communication is an important aspect of arts than ARCHITECTURE and architectural theory has often borrowed imagery or made analogy (similarity in some way) to these arts.
- We can discuss three in particular:
- All these arts may be seen in terms of a language used for communication.
Alexander claimed that a “shared pattern language” was essential for creativity.
Moholy – NAGY remarked that “Art is the most intimate language of the senses, a direct linking of man to man”.
- There are two senses in which we may consider the term “communication” in regard to drawings.
First, there is the need to communicate the ideas of the architect to the client and the contractor.
This may also be achieved with models, and with electronic imagery.
Second, is the way a drawing communicates its form and content to the eye and brain, and involves the study of such topics as perspective and optics.
- Three areas of training were given at the BAUHAUS according to Gropius:
- Craft training
- Drawing and Painting
- Science and Theory
- Two main aspects of visual communication which reflect the principle of combination:
- Form: what is actually received by the eye in terms of light, colour and pattern
- Meaning: how the mind interprets the patterns it receives.
- Both aspects come together and termed as apprehension.
Edmund Bacon in The Design of Cities termed:
“apprehension ——————-a living and constantly changing power, influenced by the philosophical, religious and scientific attitudes of various periods”.
- Tripartite system:
- Apprehension (attitude)
- Representation (communication and drawings)
- Realization (construction)
“It is only when these three elements are in harmony that great design is produced”.
